The 137th running of the Kentucky Derby is today, this is a day my family looks forward to every year. We sit down as a family watching the pre-race coverage, carefully looking over the horses names so we can each choose who we think will win, because of course we don’t pay any attention to the odds, nope it’s based solely on which horse has a name that stands out to us. There are years where more than one of us has chosen the same horse (Big Brown) and years where we all chose a different name that speaks to us. This year we will once again be taping the Derby as we have a packed day. Not unlike most weekends in our house it is a weekend of busyness. We are starting our day off with my husband and daughter running in a local race, followed quickly by my son’s first baseball game of the season after which I’ll be photographing a family with their sweet 2 month old little man. Did I mention we also have a Cinco de Mayo party we should be attending in there as well… Thank goodness for the dvr! Of course this means avoiding TV and radio until we can sit down to watch the race, but we’ve done before I’m sure we can do it again. The Derby is on my family’s wish list of things to do, some day. In the mean time we have started a tradition of going to Arlington to watch the races on Father’s Day weekend. I love the excitement of each race, again choosing the winners based not on prior performance or odds, but solely on their name, watching each horse cross the finish line in record speed. I look forward to this year’s trip in just a short month or so. These are a few of the 200+ images I took last year while at the races. Gather your hats and mint juleps and enjoy the best 2 minutes in sports this afternoon.
